California Grown Tomatoes

Some of the tastiest tomatoes are grown in California. The climate is perfect for this delicious vegetable. They are relatively easy to grow, especially if you start with plants from a greenhouse that are disease resistant. All you need to do is prepare your soil by pulling the weed and removing large rocks, then rake in fertilizer. Plant the tomatoes in full sunlight about three feet apart so they can have room to spread out. If there are any flowers on the plants when you put them in your garden, snip them off before planting. That way, the plant will use its energy to form a good root system. After planting your tomatoes, water them generously every other day. If you prefer, you can also add fertilizer such as Miracle Grow to help produce a bountiful crop.

California grown tomatoes are also very tasty when sun dried. They retain their intense tomato flavor and beautiful red color. They also are an excellent source of vitamins A, B, C, and potassium, iron, and phosphorus.

There was some concern that the outbreak of salmonella was linked to California grown tomatoes, but the outbreak of at least 145 cases of salmonella in sixteen states happened before the tomato growers in California were in production. Out of the 145 cases of salmonella there were two from California, and one of those was believed to have contracted it outside of the state. A number of restaurants and schools in the Los Angeles area pulled all fresh tomato products off their menus, as well as Walmart and Kroger grocery stores. But, rest assured that California grown tomatoes are safe and very delicious to eat.
