California Grown Tomatoes

California has the best climate to grow tomatoes with its abundant sunshine and rich soil. They can be planted as soon as the frost danger is over. In most areas this can be the mid spring time. Tomatoes that are planted in April will be ripening by June and early July.

Long summers extending all the way to October will allow the tomato growers enjoy delicious harvest for 4-5 months.

Before planting, prepare the soil with good compost. Make sure it is tilled in thoroughly, mixed well and softened at least a foot deep. Pull out all the weeds so that they don’t overpower the young tomato plants.

Almost any kind of tomato plant will grow fine in California. You can choose depending on your personal needs. Plant them minimum of 3 feet apart because they grow quite large and tall. They will need strong cages around them to keep the branches from breaking as the fruits grow more and bigger. Depending on the individual needs, these cages need to be strong enough to carry the load. Strong winds can be quite damaging to tomato plants when the easily breakable branches are loaded with fruit and cannot withstand it. The standard nursery cages will not be sufficient in most cases. Real sturdy, strong cages can be custom designed from PVC pipes or heavy duty concrete wires.

Tomatoes need to be watered every other day for 10-15 minutes and exposed to full sun 4-8 hrs a day. California is blessed with rich soil, golden sunshine and a year round mild climate that makes it perfect to grow abundant amounts of delicious tomatoes.
