California tomatoes are some of the most popular tomatoes as well as some of the best tomatoes available in the United States. California is responsible for approximately half of all tomato production in this country. Tomatoes are grown all across the state, from Northern California all the way down to the Mexican border. There is a wide variety of tomatoes grown in the state of California. The California tomato has a very thick skin. They slice easily as well. Although they are a dry tomato they are one of the most desired tomatoes among consumers. They are also among some of the largest tomatoes.
Tomato season in California generally runs from early July to early September. And the season usually produces a generous amount of tomatoes. In 1970 California had a spike in tomato production and produced a little over 3 million tons of tomatoes, and in 1994 an amazing 10.75 million tons of tomatoes.
There was a recent salmonella outbreak in tomatoes, but that outbreak does not involve the popular California tomatoes. California is one of the few states not effected by the outbreak. Many fast food chains have turned to California for their tomato needs or quit carrying tomatoes completely due to this outbreak. Tomato prices in California have risen a great deal due to the recent scare. Although the price of California tomatoes has risen, they are completely safe to eat.
