Best Soils For Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a very popular plant and they really are not too hard to grow with a little care. The most important aspect of growing healthy tomatoes is to start with good soil.

The soil you use can be naturally rich and have good drainage, but you will always want to make sure you keep it that way. The best way to do that is to add compost, peat moss, or organic mulch to the soil. After spreading it on the top, work it in to a depth of five or six inches. That way the nutrients will be available to the roots when you plant your tomatoes. Also this process should be done will in advance of planting your tomatoes. The same thing can be done with poor soil, but it will take a little longer to condition it.

Tomatoes need calcium as one of their nutrients. A good way to provide this element is to crush an egg shell and put it in the hole before you plant your tomato. Tomatoes grow well in containers. Again, the key is to have good soil and you can use the same method as planting them in a garden. The container needs to be large enough so that the soil won't dry out too quickly and yet have good drainage. Without good drainage, the roots will tend to rot.

Now find a sunny place in your garden or a sunny spot on your patio for a container. Check the soil conditions, buy a disease resistant tomato, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
