California Tomatoes

One of the most popular fruits (yes, it is a fruit) grown in California is the tomato. With recent poisoning scares, the California tomato has been pretty scarce, but they are coming back with a vengeance, more strongly than ever. Tomatoes are so popular in California that a city called Carmel holds a “TomatoFest” every in the tomatoes honor. There are tomato growing contests and tomato dishes from all over by famous and not so famous chefs. You can taste tomatoes till you burst and then buy seeds of the tomatoes you like the most. They also have recipes available of some tasty tomato dishes. These dishes include, tomato jelly, tomato pineapple crumble, and tomato, caramel and bacon chew. These are just a few of the tasty offerings that you will find at TomatoFest.

California is a great place to grow tomatoes, due to its climate, rich soil, and amount of sunlight. It is possible to have success with tomatoes elsewhere though. Some important things to remember are to pick the right varieties because different tomatoes have different grow rates and heights. Do not plant them too close together, as tomatoes need room to grow and need to be planted 1.5 to 2 feet apart. Plant only what you can use or they will go to waste. Do not plant your tomatoes in shady spots; tomatoes need lots and lots of sunshine. Do not overfeed your tomatoes or you will surely kill them. Make sure to keep your tomatoes wet. Finally, do not put your harvested tomatoes in the refrigerator; temperatures below 55 degrees will cause your tomato to decompose faster.
