Different Types Of Tomatoes

Most people know that there are quite a few different types of tomatoes, such as grape tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, which are often used in salads. Then, you have vine-ripened, beefsteak, main season, and the sun-dried types, but did you know that there are hundreds of different types of tomatoes? You can actually buy what is called an heirloom rainbow blend which produces six different types and colors of tomatoes. The different colors range from white, purple-black, reddish black, green-striped, orange, and yellow.

The determinate tomato plant produces early in the season where as the indeterminate tomato plants grow all summer long. The indeterminate types are typically the ones that most home gardeners use. Beefsteak tomatoes usually ripen at the end of the season, so if you have a big enough garden, you could have a variety all summer long.

Even if you do not have room for a garden, you can still have tomatoes such as the dwarf tomato plants, because these can be grown in a hanging basket, or you can also use a small container. There are winter storage and low temperature tomato plants also. The tiny currant tomatoes aren't any bigger than blueberries.

Tomatoes are a fruit, but most people think of them as a vegetable and they are the most popular vegetable from a garden in the US. From June through September are the best time of the year to have fresh tomato slices. Any other time, plum and cherry tomatoes would be the best as far as fresh go. Otherwise, the canned type would be better than fresh ones that have poor quality.
