Interested in growing your own tomatoes? Starting your tomato plants early in the season will give you an extra advantage in the season. Home grown tomatoes offer more nutrients and vitamins than the tomatoes you buy in the store that were picked green.
The longer a tomato stays on the vine the better it is for you. It has a higher Licopene level which is one of the many vitamins found to help fight cancer and improve eyesight. Follow these few tips for growing your own tomatoes.
Start the seeds early or transplant your store bought tomatoes in full sun for at least six hours of the day. Tomatoes need to be watered consistently but only water the plants at ground level, do not allow the water to touch the leaves and do not water the plants at night.
Each one of your tomato plants needs a large space to maintain good air circulation. If the plants are crowded, they may develop a fungus and disease. Full grown plants need at least 2 feet between each if you are planting them in a garden row, if your planting them in a bucket on your patio it’s best to do the same distance.
Trying not to use pesticides? Try garlic instead. Simply rub garlic on the leaves and the little bugs won’t want to eat them. For larger bugs such as caterpillars it’s easier to just pick them off by hand. Lastly, don’t mix your tomatoes with any other plants in your garden. Tomatoes do best when they have their own area and the delicate root systems are protected. If you intend to rotate your garden, allow several rotations before you plant your tomatoes in another plants area and prep the soil in advance for tomatoes specifically.
