Tips for Growing Tomatoes

Growing tomatoes is easy and economical. In fact, it’s one of the most popular vegetable plants for home gardeners today. Tomatoes are easy to grow and will give you a huge yield of juicy delicious tomatoes. In addition, home grown tomatoes will never go to waste because there are so many ways to eat them. Freezing, canning, juicing, dehydrated, or sun-dried all ways to preserve your homegrown tomatoes to enjoy all year long.

As easy as tomatoes are to grow, there are still problems associated with growing them. Most problems are due to weather conditions such as frost, drought, or damage from a hard rain or hail. Weather conditions are often out of your control, but if you know your area is prone to early or late frosts, you can start your plants indoors or move them indoors. You can also cover up your plants to try to protect them from hail or damaging rain and wind. Watering your plants on a regular basis will get them through any drought conditions you may have.

There are also several diseases and pests that are fairly common to tomatoes plants. The first is root rot which is caused by poor drainage conditions and over watering. This is an easy disease to prevent, but almost impossible to treat. The other end of the disease spectrum is sun scald. Again, prevent this problem by shading your plants from direct sun. Many insect pests are not attracted to the actual tomato plant, but to other weeds and plants interspersed with your tomato plants. Keep your garden weed-free and avoid planting anything that pest bugs are attracted to. Know that many types of bugs contribute to a healthy garden, so don’t try to eliminate all bug life. Fences will help keep rabbits and deer out.
