Tomatoes are one of the most widely used vegetables, and California is the state most responsible for the supply of tomatoes in the U.S. and worldwide. Tomatoes are consumed by most Americans everyday in some form or fashion, either directly or indirectly. We may not necessarily sit down and eat a tomato, but many other products such as ketchup, vegetable juice, pizza, salsa, steak sauce, and even barbecued chips are made using tomatoes.
California is the world’s largest producer of processed tomatoes and is second in the nation to Florida in the production of fresh market tomatoes. The climate in California is perfect for the growing of the vegetable and they can be seen growing almost everywhere across the state. California ranks at the top for the number of acres used to grow tomatoes and approximately 35.5 percent of the nation's fresh market tomatoes are grown in California. The state accounts for nearly half of the world’s total production of processed tomatoes, as more tomatoes are processed in a couple of days in California than the second largest producing state processes the entire season.
Tomatoes are one of most consumed vegetables in the U.S., only second to potatoes. There is a huge demand for the vegetable and it is great to know that one of our country's own can be the one to supply a vast majority of them. Whether eating them fresh or processed, just remember that they are most likely California grown and proud.
