Ripeness of Tomatoes

To get tomatoes to ripen to their full potential, you want to be sure to use a soil and fertilizer that is recommended for tomatoes. It is fairly easy to tell when tomatoes are ripe. Depending on the types of tomatoes you have will depend on when they are ripe. Let us start with green tomatoes. The green ones are the hardest tomatoes to test for ripeness. This is because most kinds of tomatoes start off green. Even so, the green tomatoes are ripe when they are a dark green color.

Red tomatoes are the easiest to tell when they are ready for harvest. They are ripened best when they are a medium to dark color red. These tomatoes need to be picked just before they are fully ripened. They will ripen more as the days progress if you sit them in a windowsill with lots of sun light.

Did you know there are even pink and yellow tomatoes? These tomatoes will change color as well to let you know they are ripe. They will become darker in color. Be sure not to let them get to ripe, as they will become soft and gushy. You do not want to pick any tomatoes too early as they may not fully ripen. When you pick your tomatoes, be sure they are almost ripe, this will assure that they are firm and as they continue to ripen over the next few days in the house they will have a better, more home grown taste.
