It began with designer clothes, now we have designer tomatoes. Beautiful, big, small and all kinds of colors make the regular tomatoes look rather ordinary. Go to a farmer's market and you will be offered such a variety of tastes and shapes that you would never believe it is a tomato. As of now there are over four hundred varieties to choose from.
To begin growing heirloom tomatoes first of all, you will need to determine whether they are to be grown outside or in a greenhouse. Obviously greenhouses give you all year convenience, as outside you will need to be dependent on the weather and in which region you live.
Heirloom tomatoes can be easily grown from seed and the best way is to choose from a seed catalog.
Make sure to sow seeds four to six weeks before the last frost, cover with a plastic dome in a warm environment. After the seedlings begin to emerge remove the cover.
When the outside temperature is warm enough they can be moved outside and planted in the ground. Keep them well watered and staked and soon enough you will have the delight of having your first salad right from your garden.
Another alternative is to purchase the tomatoes plants direct from a garden center. This is an easier way to avoid any problems with seedlings. Some people prefer the satisfaction of growing right from a seed to the full fruit.
Either way you will have the satisfaction of tomatoes that look great and are delicious right in your backyard.
